More info about the Exhibition

The exhibition takes us deep into the rainforest, the centre of Maya culture. This is where immense temples and palaces were erected. As silent witnesses of a lost civilisation, the cities still hold many mysteries within their walls that are yet to be solved. The Maya lived in a territory that covered the south-east of Mexico, Guatemala and the west of Honduras and El Salvador, occupying the peninsula of Yucatán. It achieved its maximum development throughout the first millennium before our era, when the kings became deities and ruled cities such as Tikal, Palenque, Copán or Calakmul.

ROOM 1 THE CREATION OF THE MAYA WORLD

Popol Vuh encompasses the myth of creation. When there was nothing but silence and emptiness, the deities, hidden in the deep ocean, met in the day and filled the land with mountains, valleys, rivers and lakes. By pronouncing their names, they created animals that were guardians of forests and mountains.

In the first room we are surprised, just like the research experts, by the monumental architecture of the pyramids erected in the mountains. We are amazed that the secrets of hieroglyphic writing on steles, lintels, altars or precious ceramic containers can be deciphered.

Maya culture is complex. The economy is maintained by agriculture and trade, which was carried from one place to another. In the cornfield or orchards close to the homes, crops were grown with a technique used for pumpkin, kidney beans and maize. Maize was so important that it is reflected in the main deity, the Maize God. For water supply in dry seasons, effective hydraulic constructions were built. Cacao had a special value in celebrations and also as an element for exchange. Life was organised by the accuracy of the calendars, based on exceptional mathematical and astronomic knowledge.

ROOM II GLORY AND COLLPASE OF MAYA CULTURE

The “vaults” characterise the inside of the Maya temple. This second great area is based on this structure, where the peak of the culture in the Classic Period arrives with the development of large cities such as Tikal and Calakmul, monumental palaces, the importance of the divinised king and his court of nobles, scribes, musicians and servants.

The rulers will divide the territory competing for wealth and power, turning into alliances and wars. Representations of gods and rituals show the importance of a symbolic world made up by several deities who were adored in rituals including gifts, dances and even blood sacrifices.

The golden years of this culture came to an end between AD 800 and 1000. The continuous wars and increase in droughts resulted in the collapse of the society and abandonment of cities. Maya culture continued with new ways. The Postclassic cities such as Chichen Itzá and Mayapán were important centres for trade.

ROOM III MAIZE MEN AND WOMEN

After animals, the gods created the first human beings from maize. The characteristic blue sky of Maya culture and the large constructions are the inspiration throughout this next third room. It is time to observe the large stone structures, such as steles, panels and monumental structures, and to approach the deep beliefs of the culture based on the understanding of the paintings found at San Bartolo.

The monumental structure of a man with jaguar features, simulating the position of a feline prowl, brings us to observe the different scenes gathered on the amazing steles, such as the rituals of Seibal or of Dos Pilas that show a young king in the middle of a blood sacrifice ritual. The power of the ruler can be observed in the features that characterise the ruler of Calakmul and Machaquilá. The ballgame king, and the king of Lacanha and the Maize God, give warnings about the importance of the ruler in the Maya social world, images contrasting those of a captive tied up, kneeled down and deprived of his status, about to be sacrificed. This was an example and propaganda of a battle victory.
