Palacio El PortaletLab15
El Portalet Palace was built in the middle of the 18th century. It receives its name from its location, at the corner between Labradores street and the street known as Portalet de Capuchinas, now Calle de Santo Tomás. A door used to exist at the end of this street, that allowed getting to the other side of the wall, crossing the Rambla, to reach the Capuchinas Convent.
The palace we see today has gone through numerous renovations carried out by its residents over three centuries. It is a living testimony to the history of the city of Alicante. In the 19th century, part of the building was managed by the Maisonnave-O’Connor family. At the end of the 19th century it was respectively the headquarters of the Philharmonic Society, of the Federal Republican Party, and of the headquarters of the newspaper La Federación.
At the beginning of the 20th century the building housed the charitable organisation “Montepío Mercantil Provincial de Alicante“, because of the exquisite interior decorations of the Noble Hall where this association organized countless parties, charities, and conferences. The most significant renovations were carried out under the management of this organization, during the first half of the 20th century. Interior spaces were transformed and the top floor was added.
The current renovation has allowed recovering the building’s splendour and three of its rooms have become exhibition spaces. One room on the ground floor houses a Visitor Centre of the building itself, another on a mezzanine floor exhibits a Spanish Romanillos-Harris guitar Collection, and, finally, the other mezzanine holds the exhibition called “Alicante’s Monuments from Vila Nova to Vila Vella” presenting seven historic buildings of the Old Town. The noble floor in itself is of major interest. In addition to being of interest in themselves, the noble room, third floor hall, as well as the roof host seasonal and extraordinary activities of relevance in the field of culture, outreach and social relations.
