A shopping day in Alicante

A shopping day in Alicante walking tours

In Alicante you will find an enormous variety of shops and department stores to buy quality goods and products typical of the region. With regard to gastronomy, we recommend trying the typical canned food and salted fish. For those really sweet-toothed, our chocolate, dates, sugared almonds and, above all, the turrón (sweet made with honey and almonds) as well as our traditional ices. Wine, including the typical moscatel (sweet wine), anisette or fruit liquor would be an ideal end for a meal.

Also the quality of our leather goods is well-known: footwear, accessories and clothes for very reasonable prices. If you are looking for gifts for the youngest members of the family, our toys and dolls are exported to all over the world. You will find as well a number of shops and department stores with the best Spanish fashion and international brand names.

If you wish to purchase decorative items for your home, our carpets, wicker goods and traditional pieces of pottery will be of your absolute satisfaction. There are several characteristic shopping areas in the city: the area of the Teatro Principal, Mercado and Maisonnave.

Area Teatro Principal

From the Plaza Puerta del Mar, having a walk along the Explanada (esplanade), we walk towards the Rambla. In this avenue, one of the main streets of the city, we can discover the street Teniente Coronel Chapulí, an area where you will find fashion, footwear, accessories, decoration and delicatessen shops. Gerona, Castaños and Teatro streets are also main streets of the city. In the latter, you can visit the Teatro Principal (Main Theatre) and the Military Government building and some of the oldest buildings of the city.

Area Mercado Central

Walking along the Rambla, we discover at the end of this avenue, the Mercado Central (Central Market) of Alicante. This is an emblematic building of the city, you will find here all the charm of a traditional market together with the usual high quality of our products. There is another shopping area close to this market, the avenue Alfonso el Sabio and, and further away, San Vicente street. In both streets you will find a wide range of shops and, you will discover, at the end of Alfonso el Sabio, a peculiar square full of charm: Plaza de los Luceros, a modernist work of the genius Bañuls. In the case you choose San Vicente, at the end of said street you will see our Plaza de Toros (bullring), with the Bullfighting Museum of Alicante, where you will go round the bullfighting art.
